About The Bookmark Project

Hiya,

You may have found this blog by browsing the web or you may have found one of my bookmarks in a book in the Wellington City Library and been interested, or bored, enough to look it up. Either way you have stumbled on the bookmark project. Welcome!

The bookmark project is a work that involves creating bookmarks and leaving them in library books I’ve read in the Wellington City Library. For a long time I’ve been interested in street art. I am interested in its public nature, in its inclusiveness, in its ephemeral qualities. I wanted to do something that incorporated this idea of public, inclusive, free, ephemeral art and put it out into the world. Also I can be incredibly absentminded and am constantly leaving my bookmarks in library books and returning them to the library. In putting these things together, I came up with the bookmark project.

The project also has the added bonus of letting me use up scraps of paper left behind from other works, giving me a focus to keep drawing during my breaks, and giving me something to do with my practice drawings. These would otherwise just go into the recycling or scrap bin.

My goal is to try and put a bookmark into all the books (excluding graphic novels and art books that mostly consist of pictures) I read from the library during my school breaks.

If you have found one of the bookmarks, you are welcome to keep it, or swap it, or leave it for the next person, or do whatever you’d like with it. If you’re interested in making your own bookmarks and leaving them in library books and you want to put them up on this blog, just email me the image and anything you’d like to say and I’ll post it up for you.

Happy reading!!

xx

I think this is a great idea. Very original indeed. Love your bookmarks, especially Old Japan Scene. 🙂
